Since the mid 60s the August Bank Holiday has brought people together in the streets of Notting Hill for the iconic Notting Hill Carnival. These days, more than a million people flock to the area to join in the fun. The first incarnation of the carnival was a Caribbean Carnival, set up as a response to the race relations issues of the era and the Caribbean influences are certainly still a mainstay of the carnival with amazing music, costumes and food from the islands.

Get on down – it’s so much fun!

The carnival is free to attend, you don’t need tickets you just need to turn up and join in and everyone is welcome. The event starts at 6.00am on Sunday 25th August, so if you’re an early riser, head on down there. Sunday is the perfect day for families with the Children’s Parade and floats to watch, This day also tends to be a little quieter than the Monday that can get very crowded and perhaps a little too lively for the little ones. Over the weekend you can enjoy live music at Powis Square and Emslie Horniman’s Pleasance Park and there’ll be lots of great food stalls too. The Grand Finale Parade takes place on Monday 26th August, with dancing, uplifting steel drum music, street performers and a truly heady carnival atmosphere. If you’ve never been to Notting Hill Carnival, it’s an amazing experience, and if you like to take photographs, you’ll get some amazing shots over the weekend. If that’s not enough excitement for you, the party atmosphere continues with several after-party events going on in several areas of London including Chelsea and Kensington.
