Happy Tape Measure Day!

Yes you read that right, it’s July 14th, not April 1st. There really is a Tape Measure Day! The chosen date for Tape Measure Day hasn’t been chosen at random either. There’s a reason for it, and that is, that on this day, in 1868, American Alvin J. Fellows filed a patent for his new invention, the retractable tape measure!

Of course even back then tape measures were nothing new. The Romans used strips of leather with marks on to measure with, and in England, James Chesterman had created a steel measuring tape. However, Chesterman’s tape was inconvenient and incredibly expensive. It wasn’t until Fellows revolutionised the tape measure device did it become the handy, portable tool we know today.

We’ve all got one haven’t we? In our toolbox, in a drawer somewhere. There can’t be many homes without a retractable tape measure in them. Well now you know who invented them! You never know, this knowledge may win you a pub quiz one day!
