Growing up in a rough area of Brooklyn, New York, like many other teenagers, Shawn Carter found escape in the world of music. He attended high school with AZ and college with Busta Rhymes and The Notorious B.I.G, all of whom would of course go on to become famous rappers. Known around his neighbourhood as Jazzy, he then changed this to Jay-Z as a tribute to his mentor Jaz-O. Jay-Z has won many prestigious music industry awards including several Grammys, but he’s also a very successful entrepreneur. Amongst other ventures, he has his own clothing line and a chain of sports bars. Like many of us, his earliest musical influences were found among his parent’s record collection with artists such as Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye but Jay-Z states that he listens to a wide range of musical genres and find inspiration wherever music has soul, regardless of whether it’s rap, pop or R&B. He hadn’t actually realised that at 180 foot tall this would be a total impossibility! Jay-Z never writes down any lyrics, he simply remembers them. On his song Regrets, Jay-Z wasn’t happy with the way he was saying the word ‘opium’ so he practised saying it over and over again continuously for an hour, until he was happy with how it sounded. He used to carry a gun in a VHS video case. Jay-Z is the second richest rapper in the world, only P. Diddy beats him. His favourite films are True Romance and The Godfather.
