It’s a real ‘rags to riches’ story. She started out life in a poor family, money was scarce and food would often be collected from food banks. Her parents were both Pentecostal pastors, born again Christians and they were very strict, which must have been tough on a young girl who just wanted to enjoy the things that other youngsters were into at the time. Only religious music was allowed to be played in the house. In fact, her family took her to protest at concerts held by Madonna and Marilyn Manson. Devilled eggs were not to be eaten in their household, instead they had Angel eggs, and Lucky Charms cereal was banned, luck is the work of the devil, apparently! What Katy Did Music became her escape, and with the gift of a guitar when she was 13, she began singing gospel music, taking a trip to Nashville to record an album. At 17 she moved to LA and released another gospel album, while in the background she had been working on a pop album. While singing at open mic nights, she’d perform the material from her unreleased pop album and these songs came to the attention of the head of Capitol Records, who spotting her potential, immediately signed her. This catapulted Katy into another world, a world of fame and fortune.
