On Your Marks, Get Set…Go! It’s The London Marathon!

The London Marathon has been held on the streets of London every year since 1981. Just getting a place in the marathon is an achievement in itself. More than 250,000 people request a place but only around 50,000 actually get a place. Whether or not you get a place is all completely random so you have as much chance as anyone else. There will be top athletes from all over the world, but there will also be thousands of ordinary people too. The London Marathon is open to anyone.

Once you’ve secured a place, then the training starts. Completing the 26 mile course isn’t for the faint hearted!

Will you be competing this year? Will you be standing out in the streets cheering on the runners or will you be watching the race from the comfort of your own armchair? Personally the thought of it makes me feel exhausted so I’ll be watching the race on the BBC. The coverage starts on April 23^rd on BBC Two at 08:30, it then moves over to BBC One at 09:55 where you can watch the race until 15:00. If you can’t watch the whole race, or watching people run all day is a just a bit too much for you, then you can catch the highlights on BBC Two between 18:00 and 19:00.

If you’re on the move you don’t need to miss out, the race will be covered on BBC Radio Five Live and BBC Radio Five Live Sports Extra throughout the day.

If you know someone who is running, there’s a brilliant tracking service on the official website at www.virginmoneylondonmarathon.com you can simply put in their runner number, or search by surname and you’ll be able to follow anyone you like throughout the race!

I’ll be looking out for Kenneth Jones, he’s participated in every single London Marathon and isn’t planning on stopping any time soon, even though he’s 83 years old!
