F1 Heads to Sochi for the Russian Grand Prix

The Sochi circuit in Russia was added to the F1 Grand Prix calendar in 2014 and next year could be the last time we see this circuit in use. Other than the annual Grand Prix race, the track is rarely used and the area is set for redevelopment. A proposed concert hall will force the track to be shortened making it too short for Formula 1 racing. However, Russia still has a contract to hold a Grand Prix until 2025, so it’s looking likely that the race will be relocated to another circuit, quite probably to the new circuit that is currently under construction just outside of St Petersburg. This is likely to signal a big change in the Russian Grand Prix as the current circuit is held on internal roads within the park built for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Will Mercedes win yet again?

It’s interesting to note that every single Russian Grand Prix since it began in Sochi in 2014 has been won by Mercedes. Will that trend continue this year? A Mercedes driver has also been on pole position for every race except one, when Sebastian Vettel started on pole in a Ferrari in 2017.
