Sit Down For Dinner on Family Day

September 25^th has been declared Family Day. This isn’t just some random day that has been invented for no reason, Family Day has a purpose, and that purpose is to encourage us to sit down as a family and enjoy a meal together.

So many of us have busy lives. Our work commitments often mean we don’t eat together. Perhaps you get the kids meals sorted early and eat yours later because you’re just too busy. Or maybe you all eat in different rooms because you want to be doing something else at the same time.

However, research shows  that children who eat their evening meal with their families are less likely to smoke, drink alcohol or take drugs. Simply sitting down together for a meal could make all the difference for your children. So why not give it a try?

Cook something special, make sure everyone is free to sit down for a meal together. Ban mobile phones from the table and instead, chat about your day. Make it a time to air your concerns, or talk about your achievements. When your kids open up around the dinner table, you might just learn something. If nothing else, you’ll have a fun, family time.

Why not make it a habit? If you simply can’t all get together to eat every night, then how about making the effort at least once a week. It can be something you all look forward to. Perhaps you can all take it turns to choose what to eat, and perhaps take turns at cooking too?
