The Great North Run – The Biggest Half-Marathon in the UK

With 57,000 runners taking part, the Great North Run is the biggest half-marathon in the UK. The race starts on the motorway at Newcastle and ends in South Shields. There’s something pretty amazing about running along a motorway, it’s not something you get to do every day! When the racers get to the tunnels, the atmosphere turns electric with singing and chanting, making the most of the echoing acoustics!

While it’s a serious business for the elite runners, there’s also a lot of fun to be had. Crowds line the streets for the entire route so there’s plenty of encouragement and cheers for the runners to spur them on. There are even bands playing along the way, including an Elvis tribute act at mile eleven!

For those taking part, the view of the sea at South Shields is a sign that you’re nearly there, just one mile away from the finish line. The final push can be the hardest part, but the crowds here are amazing and you’ll certainly be spurred on in your final race moments.
