All eyes will be on Japan as the country host the 2019 Rugby World Cup. The event sees three times champions New Zealand defending their title against 19 other countries. The first match of the tournament sees Japan up against Russia at Tokyo Stadium on September 20th and the action continues for six weeks, a total of 48 matches, until the final on November 2nd at International Stadium Yokohama.

This is the first time an Asian country has hosted the tournament, and the matches will be played across 12 stadiums.

Watching the matches

The great news is that the matches will be free to watch on ITV and ITV4. Most matches will air on ITV except for ten which will be shown over on ITV4. More than 12 million people are expected to tune in. Will you be one of them? Kick off times vary so do check the schedule for each match. Some of them air early in the morning so be prepared for that!

Rugby World Cup Facts

The record for the most tries in a World Cup competition is held jointly by Jonah Lomu who scored 8 tries in 1995 and Bryan Habana who achieved the same number in 2007.

The whistle blown for the opening game is the same one that has been used since 1905.

The only team to have ever received two red cards in a Rugby World Cup match is Canada during their 20-0 defeat against South Africa in 1995.

In 2003, Rudie van Vuuren of Nabia represented his country in the Rugby World Cup and also the Cricket World Cup.
