Over the last month, 24 teams have competed in the FIFA Women’s World Cup with USA and The Netherlands making it into the final. This year France is hosting the event for the first time ever with matches played at several venues across the country. The final match will be held in Lyon on Sunday July 7th and kick-off is at 4pm (British Summer Time).

The match will be shown on BBC 1 so you can watch it free of charge and it will also be available on the BBC Sport Website.

The final teams

USA are in the finals again and as winners of the last World Cup, no doubt they’ll be keen to keep their title and up their total championship wins to four. Their place in the final was secured with a 2-1 win against England. That was the third match in a row with a 2-1 result in their favour. One of the highlights of their journey to the final was beating Thailand 13-0, a very impressive result.

The Netherlands team managed to grab a place in the final during extra time against Sweden and a 1-0 finish. The final goal being scored in the 9th minute of added time. This is the first World Cup final for the Netherlands team.

FIFA Women’s World Cup – The Facts

  • The first Women’s World Cup was held in 1991, it was hosted by China and it was won by the USA.
  • Ellyse Perry from Australia competed in the football World Cup in 2011 but also in the cricket World Cup in 2009 – that’s one talented lady!
