Important Information Regarding the DVLA and GDPR

Have you been inundated with emails recently, asking you to confirm you want to stay on the company’s mailing list? This is because of the new General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR. It’s the biggest change to data protection rules in 20 years and every business must comply or they could face some large fines. The new rules come into effect on May 25th, and that’s why there’s now a flurry of businesses getting their data in order quickly.

While it may mean more work for businesses, it’s good news in general as companies storing your data will have to be more accountable for the type of data they store, how they store it, and data breaches will have to be reported within 72 hours. Additionally, businesses will no longer be allowed to charge you if you want access to the data they hold about you.

Businesses must now also ensure that you have ‘opted in’ to their newsletters and promotional emails. That’s why you are now being asked to confirm your interest. So it might just be a good time to clear out your mailbox. If you’re not interested, it really is a case of ignore it, and it will go away.

So what is the impact on the DVLA?

The DVLA have now changed the wording on the V5C (vehicle log book). The new wording is as follows…

DVLA handles your personal data in accordance with road vehicle law and data protection laws. The law allows us to release your data to the police and other enforcement bodies. We also provide data to other parties where the law allows it.

If you’d like to know more about how the DVLA processes your data you can read their full privacy notice at www.gov.uk/dvla/privacy-policy or you can call 0300 790 6106 to request a written copy.
