Get in touch with HMRC

Your very first port of call is HMRC. You must notify them that you are importing a vehicle and you shouldn’t proceed with contacting the DVLA until you have confirmation of NOVA. That’s Notification Of Vehicle Arrival.

Send all your documentation to the DVLA

Once you have confirmation from HMRC, then the next step is to send all the relevant documentation to the DVLA and this is where it can get rather complicated because they need a lot of paperwork from you. But take it one step at a time and you’ll be fine!

What exactly do the DVLA require?

So here goes, you’ll need to send them…

  • An Irish Reg Certificate, officially called the RF101 and this should be issued after 2004. If your RF101 was issued prior to 2004 then you’ll also need to submit ‘An Extract of Mainfile’.
  • The current MOT certificate.
  • The V55/5.
  • A valid insurance certificate.
  • A cheque for road tax payable to DVLA.
  • A cheque for the first registration fee, payable to DVLA. At the time of writing the fee for this is £55.
  • You’ll also need to send in documents to prove your name and address.
  • The final item they will need from you is a Certificate of Conformity. (only needed if your vehicle is under 10 years old)

Print out our handy checklist and you can tick everything off as you go, so you won’t miss anything out.

Have all this information ready and you’ll certainly save yourself some time and you’ll have your new car on the UK roads in no time. If any of the above information still has you stumped then do get in touch as we do offer a service to help you with your documentation, liaising with the DVLA on your behalf, which can make the job a lot easier for you!
