Keeping safe on the roads this Christmas

week50-post2

Christmas can be a difficult time for drivers. The weather can be horrendous, but you’re often obligated to travel, to visit friends and relatives over the festive season. Sadly many accidents happen on the roads around Christmas time, but there are precautions you can take to minimise your chances of it happening to you.

Make sure your car is in tip-top condition before you set off on a journey. Check your oil and screen wash levels. Remember, screen wash can freeze, so it’s a good idea over the colder weather to spend a little more money and pick up some screen wash that is functional to a lower temperature.

It’s wise to keep some blankets in the car in case of a breakdown, make sure you have breakdown cover in place, and always travel with a mobile phone so you can call for help if you need to. Of course, you should also ensure that you have the number of your breakdown company in your phone; it’s amazing how many people forget to do this!

No matter how important you think your Christmas obligations are, never travel if the roads are just too bad. Your loved ones would rather see you after Christmas, than have you risk your life to visit them for Christmas day.

Also never drink and drive. It can be easy to ‘just have one or two’ when everyone is in good spirits, but it’s not worth it. Driving after a drink is bad enough, but when the roads can get icy fast, it’s very dangerous indeed.
