Government plans to reduce the cost of driving

There’s no denying, owning a car is expensive. Insurance, road tax, petrol and the ongoing maintenance of your vehicle can leave you feeling that car ownership is a bottomless pit into which all your spare cash goes, but for most us we couldn’t realistically manage our lives without a vehicle, so we have no choice but to keep footing the bills.

There may be some good news on the horizon though, as the government have recently set out plans to help reduce the costs that motorists face. Currently motorway service stations sell petrol at higher prices than other petrol stations. When you’re on the motorway you’re effectively a captive market, it’s far too much hassle to leave the motorway to find a petrol station, so if you need to fill up, you opt for the nearest services. The government are suggesting an end to these inflated motorway fuel prices. The other welcome suggestion is a freeze in the cost of MOT tests. A price increase of £4 has now been ruled out, and the price will be frozen at the current price of £54.85 until 2015.
