Displaying license plates – get it right

Number Plates

There are strict rules regarding number plates. You need to follow them all to the letter or you can be fined up to £1000. A license plate that doesn’t conform to the standards will also cause your car to fail an MOT.

Don’t be caught out, learn about the rules. Firstly, your plates must be clean and visible. A quick wipe with a cloth now and then will ensure your plates are clean or take a trip to the car wash. However tempting it may be to alter the characters to make them look more personalised, such as moving a 1 and a 3 closer together to look more like a B, don’t do it, it’s illegal. There are strict guidelines about the spacing between the characters and the size of the characters and they cannot be altered. The same goes for the font. There is one standard font and you can’t use any other.  The characters must also not be 3D.

The plates themselves must be white for the front plate and yellow for the rear plate with black characters. Motorbike plates must have the registration split over two lines.

If you buy your plates from Speedy Reg we ensure that your plates conform to all the rules and are 100% legal.
