Crackdown sees arrest over motorhome ‘thefts’ thanks to Automatic Number Plates Recognition

POLICE involved in a nationwide crackdown on doorstep criminals discovered two suspected stolen motor homes in Brean.

Rogue Trader Day last Wednesday saw officers out in force across the country hunting anyone offering work to elderly and vulnerable people at sky-high prices.

Officers also used Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras to check scores of roads to identify vehicles wanted in connection with doorstep crimes, or any other offences.

Two motor homes, believed to have been stolen from the Staffordshire area, were discovered by police using the ANPR cameras.

A man in his 30s from the Bristol area has been arrested in connection with the alleged thefts.

Local officers and PCSOs also hit the streets for much of the day armed with hundreds of leaflets they delivered to homes around Cheddar, Burnham, Brean and Berrow.

The leaflet drops were targeted at town centres and residential areas where a high proportion of elderly people live, and contained information about potential scams and what people should do if they have received a visit from an unsolicited caller.

Police said the day of action was part of an ongoing joint campaign with trading standards officers to combat rogue traders and distraction burglars.

Supt Trevor Margenout said: “Our advice to people is not to accept any offer of work on the spot from a cold caller.

“If you are thinking of having work done, we advise people to always get three quotes from reputable companies and ask friends or family for their recommendations.”
