2018 Marks the 90th Anniversary of the Oscars!

The Academy Awards or ‘Oscars’ honours the achievements of everyone involved in the film industry. This year is expected to be as glittering and star studded as ever with Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water expected to do very well with nominations in 13 categories including the coveted Best Picture Award.

This year, the awards will take place on March 4th, a little later in the year than usual, so it doesn’t coincide with the Winter Olympics. The ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and the host is comedian Jimmy Kimmel who also hosted the awards last year. It’s the first time anyone has hosted the awards two years running since Billy Crystal played host in both 1997 and 1998.

Who will pick up those coveted Oscars?

Awards are given out in 24 categories, and the nomination list has been announced. The Shape of Water has a very good chance of picking up a few awards with their 13 nominations, but Dunkirk could also do well, having been nominated in 8 categories, including that of Best Director. Director Chris Nolan has never been nominated for an Oscar before, so it’s a big achievement for him. It will come as no surprise that Three Billboards Outside Ebbing. Missouri has fared well in the nominations with a total of seven, but some may be surprised that Darkest Hour and Phantom Thread have both been nominated in six categories. Sci-fi fans will be pleased to see that the list of nominated films includes Blade Runner 2049 and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Meryl Streep has been nominated for the Best Actress award for her role in The Post. This is her 21st nomination so she’s certainly no stranger to the Oscars.
