We are all guilty of forgetting things from time to time however the majority of us will own up to it rather than creating far fetched excuses in a bid to get away with it. The DVLA have recently complied a list of their top ten excuses for not paying their road tax with the top excuse being “My accountant told me I’m due a tax rebate so I didn’t think I needed to pay again this year.”

The DVLA recently published a list of excuses that were given to them as to why road tax had not been paid and the list ranged from ‘having the man-flu’ to the old classic ‘my dog ate the paperwork’.

Carolyn Williams, DVLA’s head of digital services, said: ‘The vast majority of people tax their car on time but it amazes me to see the excuses people come up with.

‘It’s easier than ever before for people to tax their car and our digital services are designed to be used any time of day or night to fit in with people’s lifestyles – so there really is no need for silly excuses.’

If a vehicle has not been road taxed or declared off the road (SORN) the vehicle owner will face a fine. If the untaxed vehicle is seen on a public road it could be clamped, impounded or subsequently crushed.
