It is important to note that when we refer to Irish Number Plates we are referring to number plates from Northern Ireland and not Southern Ireland. Southern Irish registrations cannot be transferred, and therefore when we refer to Irish number plates we are in fact meaning Northern Irish number plates.

The majority of Northern Ireland numbers that have shorter digits for example RJI 5, BIG 11, ELZ 11 etc are held back from general allocation. Coleraine DVA will then release these numbers in auctions and therefore are more expensive. The DVA (Driver Vehicle Agency) issue these number plates on a Certificate of Entitlement, and therefore must be transferred onto a Northern Irish registered vehicle first. Why Irish Number plates make good personalised plates?

For example if your name is Jillian, an option for your name would be JIL 3931. Likewise if your name if Barry, you would quite often be called BAZ and therefore a perfect number plate for you would be BAZ 6611. Unfortunately there is no retention system in Northern Ireland, however, once the Irish registration is on your vehicle it can then be transferred onto a Retention Certificate at a cost of £105 and again this can be completed in your local DVLA office.
