LEW 1S number plate

McLaren Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton has scoffed at reports that he paid the equivalent of about R3-million for a personalised number plate.

Tabloid newspapers reported that he bought the registration LEW1S to put on his car in Switzerland but the 23-year-old race ace said ahead of this weekend’s French GP: “That sounds like the worst number plate I’ve ever heard of ‘I wouldn’t spend 100 pounds on a number plate’.

“I’m not stupid enough to spend a fortune on a number plate. I wouldn’t spend 100 pounds on a number plate.”

Hamilton, who will start Sunday’s race at Magny-Cours with a 10-place penalty after crashing into Ferrari’s World champion Kimi Raikkonen at the previous round in Canada, said he had been unaware of the story until Thursday. – Reuters
