The power plant manufacturer’s ISBe 4.5litre engine has been selected for the Mayor of London‘s Routemaster successor.

Cummins Emission Solutions are working alongside Wrights to develop an after treatment system that will allow the vehicle to meet NBfL’s low emissions targets. The unit will reduce nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions to Euro V/EEV standards, while an additional Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) will be fitted between the engine and the SCR system to cut down carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) discharges. According to the engine specialist, this should result in one of the cleanest buses on the planet, with a carbon footprint less than half that of the majority of buses operating London today.

Cummins Director of Automotive Engine Business for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Neil Pattison, said “Cummins has significant experience in cleaning up London buses over the last 20 years. Many of the original Routemasters were re-powered with Cummins B5.9 Euro2 engines in the 1990s, delivering improved reliability and fuel economy with lower emissions. One Routemaster was fitted with an early exhaust after treatment system in 2000, becoming the cleanest bus in London some time before the Low Emission Zone was introduced. Also, Cummins Euro4 ISBe engine and SCR system was the first to be approved for the Low Emission Zone without the need for particulate filtration.

Cummins engineers are working with Wrightbus to make the New Bus for London, one of the world’s ‘cleanest’ buses in terms of emissions.
