{"id":1458,"date":"2010-09-08T10:00:17","date_gmt":"2010-09-08T09:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.speedyreg.co.uk\/blogs\/?p=1458"},"modified":"2020-03-19T12:18:41","modified_gmt":"2020-03-19T12:18:41","slug":"independent-driving-and-riding-section-of-the-practical-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.speedyreg.co.uk\/blogs\/2010\/09\/independent-driving-and-riding-section-of-the-practical-test\/","title":{"rendered":"Independent driving and riding section"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Independent driving will become part of the practical driving test in Great Britain in October 2010.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Which tests will include the independent driving or riding section<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The independent driving or riding section will be included in the following practical driving tests:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>car<\/li>\n<li>motorcycle module two<\/li>\n<li>large goods vehicle (LGV)<\/li>\n<li>passenger carrying vehicle (PCV) tests<\/li>\n<li>approved driving instructor (ADI) driving ability (sometimes called \u2018part two\u2019)<\/li>\n<li>taxi (also allowed with a <a href=\"https:\/\/gentleninja.com\/blog\/taxi-dispatch-software-companies\/\">taxi dispatch software<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Independent driving explained<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>From 4 October 2010 your practical driving test will include a 10 minute section of independent driving.<\/p>\n<p>During your test you\u2019ll have to drive independently by either following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a series of directions<\/li>\n<li>traffic signs<\/li>\n<li>a combination of both<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To help you understand where you\u2019re going, the examiner may show you a diagram.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t matter if you don&#8217;t remember every direction, or if you go the wrong way &#8211; that can happen to the most experienced drivers.<\/p>\n<p>Independent driving is not a test of your orientation and navigation skills. Driving independently means making your own decisions &#8211; this includes deciding when it\u2019s safe and appropriate to ask for confirmation about where you\u2019re going.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The independent driving route<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you ask for a reminder of the directions, the examiner will confirm them to you.<\/p>\n<p>If you go off the independent driving route it won\u2019t affect the result of your test unless you commit a driving fault.<\/p>\n<p>If you go off the route or take a wrong turning, the examiner will help you to get back on the route and continue with the independent driving.<\/p>\n<p>If there are poor or obscured traffic signs, the examiner will give you directions until you can see the next traffic sign &#8211; you won\u2019t need to have a detailed knowledge of the area.<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t use a sat nav for independent driving as it gives you turn-by-turn prompts. Independent driving tests how you make your own decisions.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Special needs<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has procedures to identify special needs and disabilities when tests are booked online or over the phone. The examiner then knows which type of special needs you have so reasonable adjustment can be made.<\/p>\n<p>For the independent driving section, this could be by asking you which method you prefer &#8211; following traffic signs or a series of directions (a maximum of three), which are supported by a diagram. In some cases this may be shortened to just two directions.<\/p>\n<p>Driving examiners are very experienced at dealing with candidates who speak little or no English. For example, sometimes they will write place names so it is clear to you where you\u2019re being asked to drive to.<\/p>\n<p>You can have an interpreter along with you on your test if you wish.
