Imagine being Robert Burns and having your life and works\ncelebrated in such a huge way every single year! Famous for his poetry and\nsongs, we start every year with his classic Auld Lang Syne, then on January 25th<\/sup>\nwe enjoy a Burns Supper and all that goes with it, which is all good stuff,\nhaggis, whisky, fun and laughter! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Burns night is celebrated on January 25th<\/sup> as this\nwas his birthday. The tradition began in 1801, five years after his death, when\nhis friends held a memorial supper for him. Of course it\u2019s grown somewhat since\nthen with millions of people celebrating, not just in Scotland, but all over\nthe world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a great night to get together with friends and family,\nso if you\u2019ve never held a Burns Supper before, then why not make 2020 the year\nyou start? We bet it will be the start of a wonderful tradition in your\nhousehold. Of course you\u2019ll want to do it right, so arm yourself with the\ncollected works of Robert Burns, stock up on Scottish music, order a haggis and\nmake sure you have some fine whisky to share around. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s traditional to welcome your guests into your home\naccompanied by a piper. Now finding someone who can play the bagpipes is going\nto be a tricky job at the best of times, and finding one who isn\u2019t otherwise\nengaged on Burns Night is going to be harder still. So the best option is\nsimply to play a recording of bagpipes, that way you can turn it down when the\nneighbours start to complain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before you crack open the haggis and whisky, you can read\nout The Selkirk Prayer, if you\u2019re not Scottish, you\u2019ll have to do your best to\nimprovise the accent\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some hae meat and\ncanna eat,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And some wad eat that\nwant it,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But we hae meat and\nwe can eat,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And sae the Lord be\nthankit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The haggis should then be carried into the room with\nsuitable pomp and more piping and a toast of whisky should be at the ready for\nthe recitation of To a Haggis<\/em>. Then all that\u2019s left is to stick some\ngood traditional Scottish music on, serve the haggis up with neeps and tatties,\nperiodically recite some Burns and have a fabulous time! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
