If the document is lost or stolen, you\u2019ll need to replace it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What you need to know<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The grantee must sign the retention document (if available). If you&#8217;re the nominee, you\u2019ll need the grantee\u2019s signature on the retention document.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Renewing a retention document<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>About four weeks before the document runs out, a reminder letter is sent to the grantee to extend the right of retention for one, two or three years.<\/p>\n<p>Complete the retention document and enclose the fee of \u00a325 for one year, \u00a350 for two years or \u00a375 for three years. The fee is not refundable.<\/p>\n<p>If the retention document has run out, the grantee must return the document and appropriate fee with a letter explaining why the application is late. The request will be considered.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Add or change nominee details<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The grantee can add or change the nominee details at any time or at the same time of assigning the personalised registration to the nominee\u2019s vehicle at a DVLA local office.<\/p>\n<p>Complete the retention document and enclose the \u00a325 fee. The grantee must sign the document.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Changes to the grantee\u2019s name and address due to marriage or divorce etc<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The grantee will need to complete the document and return it to DVLA with a covering letter enclosing any relevant documents to support the changes. There is no charge.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Errors on the retention document<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The grantee will need to return the document to DVLA with a covering letter giving details of the errors eg misspellings. There is no charge.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Replacing a lost or stolen retention document<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The grantee will need to request a replacement document in writing. Requests will only be accepted from the grantee. There is no charge.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What you need to send to DVLA<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Return the retention document with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>with the appropriate section completed and signed by the grantee<\/li>\n<li>the appropriate fee if needed &#8211; cheques payable to \u2018DVLA, Swansea\u2019<\/li>\n<li>an accompanying letter if needed, signed by the grantee<\/li>\n<li>send to Cherished Transfer Section, A2, DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BW<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have the retention document for any reason, then send a letter of explanation signed by the grantee.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">When to expect your new retention document<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A new retention document will be posted to the grantee. Please allow three to four weeks for it to arrive before contacting DVLA customer enquiries.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Death of grantee or nominee<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If the grantee has died, the executor or beneficiary can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>request to surrender the retention document and request a refund of the \u00a380 assignment fee, or<\/li>\n<li>request to keep the registration number and add their details to the retention document<\/li>\n<li>make the request in writing, enclosing the retention document and a copy of the death certificate and grant of probate<\/li>\n<li>send to Cherished Transfer Section, A2, DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BW<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the nominee has died, the grantee can apply to change the nominee details.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You must return your retention document (V778) to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) to renew it if it\u2019s about to expire, or update it if there are changes to the details shown.
