The winner received a red leather belt
worth £25. Things have changed quite a bit since then with 156 golfers in the
competition and the winner taking home over a million pounds.

From a belt to a trophy

The coveted red leather belt was passed from winner to
winner until Young Tom Morris won three years in a row. This gave him the
honour of owning the belt permanently. So it was after this, in 1872 when the
famous Claret Jug trophy was created.

The Open The Facts….

The oldest ever winner was Tom Morris aged 46 in
1867.

A year later, the son of Tom Morris, also called
Tom Morris won the championship aged 17.

The longest gap between 2 championship wins is
19 years.
