When you think of May Day, you most likely just think about\nyour nice day off work for the bank holiday, but May Day itself is steeped in\nancient traditions, many of which still live on, especially in small towns and\nvillages around the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

and Winter\u2019s gone\naway-O<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While \u2018officially\u2019 summer is a way off, traditionally, May\nthe 1st<\/sup> marks the first day of summer, and you only have to look\naround you to see that this is true. The sun has started to shine, the flowers\nare blooming and the new baby lambs can be seen in the fields. Look out for the\nhawthorn in flower, it\u2019s known as the May Tree for a reason. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s not a\nbudding boy, or girl, this day,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But is got up, and\ngone to bring in May.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While May Day is the 1st<\/sup> of May, many\ncelebrations take place on the May Day Bank Holiday, purely for convenience, so\nmore people can join in. If you\u2019re keen to take a step back 2000 years in time\nand see some traditional May Day activities, then search for your local villages\nwith village greens, if you\u2019re lucky, you\u2019ll find maypole dancing or Morris\ndancers performing and a May Queen crowned with a garland of flowers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Twas early next\nmorning I made her my bride<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That the world\nwould have nothing to say<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the bells they\nshall ring and the bridesmaids shall sing<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I’ll crown her\nthe queen of the May.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
