London Marathon – Speedyreg<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Over 40,000 people gather each year to take part in the\niconic London Marathon. Many more than this apply each year, but only a few are\nlucky enough to secure a place in the race via the annual ballot. The London\nMarathon began in 1981, but the streets of London have been a venue of\nmarathons for a long time before that, with the Polytechnic Marathon first\nbeing held back in 1909. The London Marathon was the brain child of athlete\nJohn Disley and journalist Chris Brasher and was inspired by similar events\nthrough the streets of New York and Boston. Even the first race was incredibly\npopular, with over 20,000 applying to run and 6,747 being accepted into the\nrace. Chris Brasher\u2019s son Hugh is now Race Director. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

More high temperatures for race day?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year\u2019s London Marathon was the hottest ever with\ntemperatures hitting 24C. Not so much fun for those wearing fancy dress\ncostumes! With the weather taking a pleasant turn right now, it could be set\nfor another hot one this year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The race route <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The race route covers 26.219 miles around the River Thames.\nThe course is mainly flat, and starts at Greenwich Park with the finish line on\nThe Mall outside Buckingham Palace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watching the race <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 The races start at\n8:55am with the Elite Wheelchair Races. The Elite Women\u2019s Race begins at\n9:15am, and at 10:00am there\u2019s the Elite Men\u2019s Race, the British & English\nAthletics Marathon Championships and the Main Race. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

TV Coverage starts before the 8:55am race so be sure to tune\nin early. You\u2019ll be able to watch live on BBC1 and BBC2 or via the BBC Sport\nwebsite. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

#ThanksaBillion Fantastic Fund Raising for Dementia\ncharities <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The London Marathon also raises money for charities. This\nyear, the charities are both the Alzheimer\u2019s Society and Alzheimer\u2019s Research\nUK, to raise money for dementia research and awareness. The mission this year\nis to raise a billion pounds to help the million people in the UK suffering\nfrom dementia, and their loved ones and carers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
