It’s also a time to remember the 35 million plus people who have died due to AIDS related illnesses.

Science has come a long way with regards to the treatment of HIV, but still 5,000 people are diagnosed with it each year in the UK. Despite an increased awareness, there is still a stigma attached to the condition and many people still suffer from discrimination. There is still so much work to be done and so much that needs to change. Both research and education and vitally important.

How to get involved

The easiest way to get involved is to wear the red ribbon, the universal symbol of AIDS and HIV awareness. When you buy a red ribbon, you’re giving your money to this worthy cause, and by wearing it, you’re showing your support and helping to raise awareness. If someone asks why you’re wearing it, you’re introducing one more person to the campaign. Help to spread the word on social media by using the hashtag #ROCKTHERIBBON. Look out for both fabric red ribbons, and special sparkly red ribbon brooches in shops near you. There are also many events all over the country that you can attend to show your support including a large music festival held in London.

Teachers can sign up for educational resources to bring AIDS awareness into the classroom. In a recent survey, a staggering 1 in 3 young people didn’t know that whether or not you could contract AIDS by kissing, so it’s clear that further education is needed in this area.

Workplaces and communities can get involved by putting on a fundraising event. A ‘wear red day’ or a cake sale are just some of the ways in which businesses large and small can play their part.

You can find out more about World AIDS Day and make a donation to this good cause on the official website www.worldaidsday.org

December 1st is World AIDS Day, a day for the entire world to get together and take part in the battle against HIV, raising awareness and raising those all important funds to further advance research to fight HIV.
