Did you know, World Book Day has been going for over 20 years now? It\u2019s no surprise that kids who read for pleasure will do well at school, and of course reading can give so much pleasure, it\u2019s a hobby that\u2019s well worth encouraging, that will stay with them for life. On World Book Day, kids can dress up as their favourite character from a book. It\u2019s a lot of fun coming up with ideas. Who will your kids be this year? There are always plenty of Harry Potters about on World Book Day, but there are so many characters out there. You can be anyone you want! The Very Hungry Caterpillar perhaps? Or maybe Willy Wonka?<\/p>\n

The origins of World Book Day<\/strong><\/p>\n

World Book Day originally started in Spain. It was the idea of Vicente Clavel Andres, a writer from Valencia, who proposed the day to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes. The official day picked was 23rd<\/sup> April, the day Miguel de Cervantes died. In the UK, we celebrate the day on the first Thursday in March. This was chosen because 23rd<\/sup> April sometimes falls within the school summer holiday, and kids love World Book Day so much, they don\u2019t ever want to miss one!<\/p>\n

World Book Day Around The World<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are World Book Day events going on all around the world. In Spain, they still celebrate the works of Miguel de Cervantes with a two day long reading of his book Don Quixote<\/em>. In the US, there\u2019s a big street festival in Maryland to celebrate.<\/p>\n

Look Out for the Special \u00a31 Books<\/strong><\/p>\n

Every year, book stores have a range of great books, made especially for World Book Day, with a price of just \u00a31. What\u2019s more, across the UK and Ireland, ore than 15 million book tokens are given out to school children, so they can go and choose one of these great books for free. There are some great titles to choose from this year. For younger readers there is a Mr Men book, a Paddington Book, The Bolds<\/em> written by Julien Clary, and The Girl Who Thought She Was a Dog<\/em> by Clare Balding. There\u2019s even a Marvel Avengers Greatest Heroes book. There\u2019s also some great full novels for older readers too. I have a feeling there will be plenty of adults picking some of these up too. The selection looks great this year. The thriller I Have No Secrets<\/em> by Penny Joelson sounds intriguing and Summoner<\/em>, about a boy who can summon demons will no doubt be popular.<\/p>\n
