St Andrew has been celebrated in Scotland for thousands of years although he didn\u2019t actually become the patron saint of Scotland until 1320. In life, St Andrew was a kind and generous man from humble beginnings. He dedicated his life to helping people who were less fortunate than himself.<\/p>\n

While there were always feasts and celebrations in honour of St Andrew, This special day for celebrating St Andrew didn\u2019t come about until the 18th<\/sup> century, and what\u2019s more, it was actually started in America! A group of Scottish ex-pats living in the US started the day in 1729 in South Carolina.<\/p>\n

But perhaps you\u2019ll be more interested in what is happening now for St Andrew\u2019s Day? All over Scotland there are events going on. Glasgow has a magical torchlight St Andrew\u2019s Day parade with pipe bands, fire dancers and drummers. There\u2019s a ten day festival in Oban, another festival of music and arts in Saltire, and storytelling in Edinburgh.<\/p>\n

There are fireworks and traditional Scottish food being served up on the shores of Loch Lomond and a similar event in St Andrews, which was named as such as it is thought to be the final resting place of St Andrew himself. It seems like a very fitting place to spend the day and with a fire show, circus workshops, a ceilidh and a lantern procession, you certainly won\u2019t be disappointed. Even if you don\u2019t live in Scotland, a visit for St Andrew\u2019s Day is a great experience, or look for local events near you.<\/p>\n
