Yes you read that right, it’s July 14th<\/sup>, not April 1st<\/sup>. There really is a Tape Measure Day! The chosen date for Tape Measure Day hasn’t been chosen at random either. There’s a reason for it, and that is, that on this day, in 1868, American Alvin J. Fellows filed a patent for his new invention, the retractable tape measure!<\/p>\n

Of course even back then tape measures were nothing new. The Romans used strips of leather with marks on to measure with, and in England, James Chesterman had created a steel measuring tape. However, Chesterman’s tape was inconvenient and incredibly expensive. It wasn’t until Fellows revolutionised the tape measure device did it become the handy, portable tool we know today.<\/p>\n

We’ve all got one haven’t we? In our toolbox, in a drawer somewhere. There can’t be many homes without a retractable tape measure in them. Well now you know who invented them! You never know, this knowledge may win you a pub quiz one day!<\/p>\n
