Number Plates Phonetic Alphabet

It is worth knowing that whenever you enquire about a registration over the telephone you will be required to confirm the letters phonetically. The main reason for this is that the person on the other end of the phone is clear on the registration you are enquiring about. Many mistakes can be made when confirming number plates, as B can sound like a D, and S can sound like a F. Therefore the following phonetic alphabet is used within the number plates industry:

A  = ALPHA

B = BRAVO

C = CHARLIE

D = DELTA

E = ECHO

F = FOXTROT

G  = GOLF

H = HOTEL

I = INDIA

J = JULIET

K = KILO

L = LIMA

M = MIKE

N = NOVEMBER

O = OSCAR

P = PAPA

Q = QUEBEC

R = ROMEO

S = SIERRA

T = TANGO

U = UNIFORM

V = VICTOR

W = WHISKEY

X = X-RAY

Y = YANKEE

Z = ZULU

Even with the phonetic there may still be confusion, as sometimes is someone ringing up looking for a quotation and is saying SIL, we would confirm the registration a S for Sierra and on a few occasions we’ve received the following reply “No its not on a Sierra, it on a….”
