2:  Prefix Searches – Number Plates with the prefix year letter at the beginning, eg: J17 XNE

3: Current Style – Number Plates with the year letter in the middle, eg:  MS61 TCH

4: Dateless- These are dateless registrations and therefore can be transferred onto any age of vehicle eg: 451 UXF

If you like history then Number Plates: A History of Vehicle Registration in Britain by Dave Moss could be the perfect book for you, It covers the history of number plates as well as anecdotes and some very interesting facts. It’s one of those books that will keep you entertained and give you lots of fascinating facts to tell your friends!

Number Plates Worldwide by Gunther Bamler, Timothy Drake and Petra Schomburg-Bamler is another fascinating read. You’ll learn about the number plate systems of countries all over the world. This book too is full of the most interesting and entertaining facts.

For fans of personalised plates, Fanatical About Number Plates by Ruby Speechly is definitely worth a read. It’s full of true stories about people, just like you, who are also love their personalised plates. Read this and you’ll soon realise you’re not alone in your love of license plates! It’s not all stories though, there’s also information about how to register and transfer plates, as well as the history of plates, so it’s a useful book too.

If you live in Massachusetts in the US there’s a special lottery that runs each year, with low number license plates for the winners! The lottery came about after a dispute regarding a registrar who was providing low number plates to his friends and family. The Governor at the time,decided that a lottery was a good way to distribute these more sought after plates more evenly among the population and eliminating any possibility of a registrar taking advantage of the system and awarding the best plates to their friends.

The winners just pay a small registration fee for their prize plates. If you enter the lottery,  you can’t choose which plate you win, they are awarded in order, so each winner picked gets the next plate on the list. Recent plates given away in the lottery include N54, N77 and 493. You can see how these would be very desirable. Much more eye-catching than the usual 6 character plates.

So you want to look cool, you want your car to turn heads, but unfortunately you can’t afford a Ferrari or a Lamborghini. Well sadly this is case for most of us, so forget the car and think about the number plate. If you buy a new car soon after a new plate comes out, you’ll have a real status symbol. The latest plates always attract attention. If you’re planning to buy a new car in July then you may as well wait until August and get the very latest plate. It’s also a point worth thinking about  with regards to selling your car in the future too. If two identical cars were up for sale, the one with the later plate is more likely to get a slightly higher sale price, even though in reality it might only have been registered a few days earlier if one was registered before the plate change, and one just after.

But what if you don’t want to buy a new car or can’t afford to buy a brand new vehicle? A personalised plate is the answer. You will look cool, no one will know the age of your car and you’ll definitely turn heads. A real status symbol without the expense of a new car. All cars must have number plates and each plate is unique, you’ll never find someone with the same registration as you. We’re so used to seeing them we take it for-granted but it’s really a brilliant system. Every car is linked to the owner and so it is easily traced. If your car is stolen and abandoned, if it is found, the police can quickly look up the owner and get in touch with you to let you know it has been found. If a car is used in a crime, a witness might make a note of the registration, or the number plate might be caught on camera. If it is, then the police can easily find out who owns that car and it can help in the investigation. This is a much simpler process than if the witness had simply seen a white Fiesta for example. It’s also very useful in road traffic accidents. If a crash victim is unconscious and doesn’t have any ID on them, the identity of the victim can be traced via the registration plate of the car.  If a car has the original plates on, i.e. If they haven’t been replaced with personalised plates, then the age of a car can also be deduced from the number plate.

Every year since 1992, come hail, rain or snow Dessie Elton from Speedyreg and more recently his son Rory supports a local Charity New Year’s Day Swim. Rory is seen above walking on water, but we have been told that he also took the plunge and completed the swim.

This year was the 19th Annual Galloon New Year’s Day charity swim, where 39 volunteers plunged into Lough Erne, at Galloon jetty Newtownbutler in the name of charity.  This year the money raised was for the Neurofibromatosis charity.

John Fitzpatrick who organised this event, said “everything went well and it was a great day”.  He is looking forward the organising the 20^th annual swim next year.

At least this year the organisers didn’t have to break the ice beforehand for the swim!!
