The BBC recently obtained a list of the ten most expensive DVLA number plates under the Freedom of Information Act and it makes for interesting reading.

At number 1 is the plate 1 D. It’s easy to see why this sold for a massive £352,000. It’s short and so looks incredibly cool and it would be desirable for so many people. The number 1 would be preferred over any other number, and anyone whose name begins with D would love this plate and there are plenty of Davids, Debbies and Daniels out there! Coming in at number 2 is 51 NGH that sold for £254,000. This represents the name Singh, a common Asian surname, so again there would be a big market for this plate. The third most expensive plate is 1 RH selling for £247,000, again a nice short plate that would suit anyone with those initials. In fourth place is K1 NGS that sold for £231,000 and the fifth most expensive plate sold was 1 O which went for £210,000.

The sixth most expensive plate was 1 A that sold for £200,000, the seventh was 1 OO going for £197,000, the eighth 2 O selling for £142,000, the ninth 6 B went for £130,000 and finally 1 HRH sold for £113,000 perfect for a member of the Royal Family!

Six times a year you have the chance to buy DVLA number plates at auction. The plates released are the more desirable plates that have a higher level of personalisation than standard DVLA plates and so they have been withheld to be sold at auction to raise money for the treasury. It’s a good chance to snap up a bargain priced personalised number plate, but of course attending an auction can be problematic. You need to be free on the day of the auction. You might have to travel a long way, and you may need to spend quite a bit of extra money on accommodation near the auction and all the other sundries that are involved in a trip away.

We at Speedy Reg attend all these auctions, so we’ll always be at the auction should you want us to bid on your behalf. Because we’re always doing this, we’re also fully experienced in the way the auctions work so you can rely on us to bid on your DVLA number plate of choice. Many other companies will charge you a percentage of the final winning bid, but we make it simple and just charge you a set fee, so you’ll know in advance how much you’ll need to pay us. Of course you’ll be able to set the maximum amount you want to bid and we’ll do our best to get you a bargain.

The DVLA, which stands for The Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency, is the organisation which is responsible for enforcing GB number plates and car registration rules. Similarly in Northern Ireland a separate body known as the DVA works in the same way.

Registration dealers such as Speedy Reg, adhere to all DVLA and DVA regulations and deal with them directly so it is always best to purchase your choice of registration through a reputable company like Speedy Reg to ensure that everything is legal and above board.

If there is a number plate you have always wanted but are unsure about whether you can place the number on your vehicle or if perhaps there may be restrictions why not give the team at Speedy Reg a call. They will talk you through the process involved and answer any questions you may have. It really couldn’t be easier to get the personalised registration you have always wanted.

If you’re looking for a cheap personalised plate you can choose from literally millions of DVLA number plates. There are two different styles of DVLA plate available. Current or new style, and classic style.

Current style plates have two letters, followed by a two number date identifier then three more letters. You can have any combination as long as it is not already registered to someone else, so you’ve got plenty of combinations to choose from. These plates have been issued since September 2001.

Classic style plates are a little different. They have the date identifier at the beginning of the plate, so the format is a letter, one or two numbers (from 1 to 20), then three letters. These classic plates were issued from 1983 to August 2001.

When it comes to the two digits that represent the year, you can choose a number that shows your car to be the age it is, or older, but you can’t pick a date that makes your car look newer than it actually is, so bear this in mind when you’re searching for your DVLA plate.

These DVLA plates represent great value for money. Buying a plate is a simple process, you can have your new plates on your car within a matter of just a few days.

You can pick up a great DVLA number plate for a very low price. You can pick and choose your letters and numbers so there’s plenty of scope for personalisation, however, there’s one thing you must bear in mind, these are plates that show the date of issue and so you are not legally allowed to have a plate on your car that makes your car appear to be younger than it actually is, so this may limit your choice a little. You can though have a plate with an older date on, so you’re not just limited to one single year.

It’s not too much of a problem though, if you simply can’t find the plate you want within the DVLA format search, here at Speedy Reg we have a huge array of dateless plates that you can have on any car, regardless of age. Having a dateless plate needn’t be expensive either. We’ve got dateless plates starting at £99 and under. It’s the perfect solution if you’d rather hide the age of your car.

Buying your number plate from us is very easy. Using the simple search facility you’ll be able to find your perfect plate. The system will make suggestions if you put in a word or numbers you’d like included. There are plenty of payment options, whether you want to pay by credit or debit card, bank transfer, Paypal or even postal orders it’s no problem. We can even make your new plates for you at a cost of just £20 a pair and that includes VAT and P&P!

You might think a standard DVLA number plate is boring, no chance for any personalisation there, but you’d be wrong. The standard format of letters, followed by a number then three letters does actually give a lot of opportunity for personalised number plates. There are over 30 million DVLA registration plates available to buy so there’s plenty of choice; there’s bound to be one to suit you.

Let’s have a look at some you could snap up now. How C16 SLY, perfect for Sylvester Stallone perhaps! Or if you’re a fan of John Grisham novels, then there’s GR13 HAM! J17 XNE would be perfect if your name is Jayne, and if you have a three letter name or nickname there there are a whole host of perfect plates. If you’re a Robin or a Robert then AA04 ROB or AA12 BOB would be ideal for you. Any Catherine would be thrilled to have AA07 CAT, which of course would be perfect for a cat lover too! Of course if you’re more of a dog person then there’s also AA11 DOG available. Sues can have AB13 SUE, Paul could have PA05 ULY if they’re known as Pauly. If you know an Emma or an Emily and you think they’re ace, then EM02 ACE could be the perfect present for them!

If your number plate doesn’t conform to the DVLA’s strict legal requirements, then now is the time to put it right. Police forces all over the country are clamping down on illegal plates. If you’re caught with an illegal plate you could be fined up to £1000. It’s just not worth the risk.

Even if you think your plate is legal, it’s worth double checking to make sure your plates actually do abide by the DVLA’s criteria.

Your plate must be reflective. The front plate must have black characters on a white background, and the rear plate must have black characters on a yellow background. The only font you can use is the standard ‘Charles Wright’ font. Any other typeface is illegal. You cannot use italics or adapt the font in any way. You mustn’t have fixing or bolts that alter the spacing of the characters on your plate or that make a character look like another character, so for example you can’t insert a bolt in the middle of a 0 to make it look more like a B.

Even if your plate conforms to all these regulations, you also must make sure that it is clean, as it is also illegal to have an illegible number plates, so make sure you give your number plates a wipe over once in a while or you could be fined for having a dirty number plate.

It’s the job of the DVLA to weed out any potentially offensive or rude license plates. This can be anything from swear words, to racist or drug related words or phrases. Rather surprisingly this job isn’t done by a computer but instead by a team of staff at the DVLA who meet twice a year to make a decision on which plates should be banned, and which can be allowed through. This censorship applies to standard plates and personalised plates too. Anything ending in 2 HAG or 2 LUT are banned. You won’t be allowed to have BU62 GER, SH12 HED or LE12 ZER.

Occasionally some plates do slip through the net and the DVLA do get complaints about offensive plates. If you choose a personalised plate that spells out something potentially rude or offensive you may be immediately told that it isn’t allowed, however if it does get through, you could still be made to remove it at a later date if it is brought to the attention of the DVLA, perhaps if someone has put in a complaint about it, as Alan Clarke of Chesterfield found out when he was ordered to remove his BO11 LUX plate just six weeks after he had bought it. However after an appeal the decision was reversed and Mr Clarke was allowed to keep his unusual personalised plate.

Have you seen any rude plates that have slipped through the net?
